AC Electricity Cost Calculator

See exactly how many units your AC consumes and what it costs — per hour, per day and per month — for your tonnage, star rating and usage.

❄️ AC is usually the biggest jump in your summer bill. A single 1.5 ton AC run 8 hours a day can add ₹2,000–3,000 a month. Pick the right star rating and set temperature and you keep a big chunk of that.
1.5 ton suits most 120–160 sq ft rooms
Inverter ACs run at variable speed and use less over a cooling cycle
Home tariff in India: ₹6–10/unit

How This Calculator Works

It uses the average power your AC draws over a cooling cycle — not just the peak rating — so the figure matches your real bill more closely.

Tonnage sets the cooling capacity, and star rating / inverter sets how efficiently it delivers that cooling. A 5-star inverter does the same job using fewer units.

How AC Electricity Consumption Is Calculated

An air conditioner's bill comes down to one thing: how many units (kWh) it draws while running, multiplied by your tariff. The trick is that an AC does not draw its peak power continuously — the compressor cycles off once the room is cool, and an inverter AC slows down instead of stopping. This calculator uses a realistic average power so the result is close to your actual bill.

Units per Hour (kWh) = Average Power (kW) Units per Day = Average Power × Running Hours Cost per Day (₹) = Units per Day × Tariff (₹/unit) Cost per Month (₹) = Cost per Day × Days Used

Worked Example — 1.5 Ton, 8 hrs/day

1.5 ton 3-star  |  Average power ≈ 1.5 kW  |  Hours: 8/day  |  Days: 30  |  Tariff: ₹8/unit

Units per Day = 1.5 × 8 = 12 units
Cost per Day = 12 × ₹8 = ₹96/day
Cost per Month = ₹96 × 30 = ₹2,880/month
A 5-star inverter (≈1.1 kW) would cost about ₹2,112/month — saving ₹768/month.

How to Reduce Your AC Bill

  • Set temperature to 24–26°C — every 1°C lower adds roughly 6% to consumption
  • Clean filters monthly and service the AC before summer
  • Run a ceiling fan with the AC to spread cool air, so you can set a higher temperature
  • Seal gaps around doors and windows; close curtains during the day
  • Shade the outdoor unit and keep its airflow clear
  • For any AC running more than 3–4 hours a day, a 5-star inverter pays back its premium in 2–3 summers

Frequently Asked Questions

About 1.5 units/hour for a 3-star non-inverter, ~1.3 units for a 5-star, and ~1.1 units/hour for a 5-star inverter averaged over a cooling cycle. At ₹8/unit that is roughly ₹12, ₹10.4 and ₹8.8 per hour. Real consumption varies with room size, set temperature and outside heat.

A 1.5 ton 3-star AC uses about 12 units, costing ₹96/day or ₹2,880/month at ₹8/unit. A 5-star inverter uses about 8.8 units, costing ₹70/day or ₹2,112/month — saving around ₹770/month.

Yes. An inverter AC varies compressor speed instead of switching fully on and off, so it runs at low power once the room is cool. Over a season this cuts consumption by roughly 20–30% versus a non-inverter of the same tonnage, so a 5-star inverter usually pays back its higher price in 2–3 summers of regular use.

A 1 ton 3-star AC running 8 hours/day uses about 8 units/day, roughly 240 units/month, costing ₹1,920/month at ₹8/unit. A 1 ton inverter AC uses about 6 units/day (180 units/month), costing around ₹1,440/month.

A 5-star AC uses 10–20% less electricity than a 3-star of the same tonnage. For a 1.5 ton unit run 8 hours/day that is about ₹400–800/month. Over a 4-month summer the 5-star saves ₹1,500–3,000, more if the AC runs longer.

Set temperature to 24–26°C (every 1°C lower adds ~6%), clean filters monthly, run a fan with the AC, service it before summer, shade the outdoor unit, seal door/window gaps, and choose a 5-star inverter for any AC running more than a few hours a day.
