HP vs kW — What's the Difference?

Horsepower (HP) is the older unit of power still widely used for motors in India and globally. Kilowatt (kW) is the SI unit. Both measure the same thing — mechanical power output of the motor. The conversion factor is exactly 1 HP = 0.746 kW (metric horsepower is 0.735 kW, but electric motor HP always uses 0.746).

Why Indian Factories Still Use HP

Most older Indian machinery, pump manuals and motor nameplates list ratings in HP. The BEE (Bureau of Energy Efficiency) and IS standards now specify kW, but HP remains common on factory floors, electrician quotes and procurement orders. Knowing the conversion is essential for energy audits, motor selection and tariff calculations.

Electrical Input vs Mechanical Output

Remember: motor HP/kW is the mechanical output. The electrical input drawn from the grid is higher because of motor efficiency losses. A 10 HP (7.46 kW) motor running at 90% efficiency draws 7.46 ÷ 0.90 = 8.29 kW from the supply. Always use this for electricity cost calculations.
