Understanding Load Factor in Factory Energy Calculations
Load factor (also called demand factor) accounts for the reality that not all machines in a factory run simultaneously at full load. A factory with 100 kW of installed equipment typically draws only 70–80 kW on average. Accurately estimating load factor is the most important part of any energy calculation — overestimating leads to oversized transformers and high fixed charges.
How to Reduce Monthly Energy Cost
- Shift heavy loads to off-peak hours where time-of-use tariffs apply
- Correct power factor to 0.95+ to reduce kVA demand charges
- Install VFDs on variable-speed applications like pumps and fans
- Upgrade to IE3/IE4 motors for significant long-term savings
