Total head (H) is the sum of static head (elevation difference), friction head (losses in pipes and fittings), velocity head, and pressure head. Friction head loss can be calculated using the Darcy-Weisbach equation. For preliminary sizing, use 20–30% additional friction head allowance over the static head.
