How This Calculator Works

Area (m²) = π × (D/2)² Velocity (m/s) = Flow Rate (m³/s) ÷ Area (m²)

Recommended pipe velocities:
Suction lines: 0.5–1.5 m/s
Discharge lines: 1.5–3.0 m/s
Above 3.5 m/s: erosion and noise risk

Pipe Velocity — Why It Matters

Pipe velocity affects erosion, noise, pressure loss and sedimentation. Too high velocity causes erosion of pipe walls and fittings, especially at elbows and tees. Too low velocity causes particulate settlement and biological growth in water pipes. The optimal range balances these concerns while minimizing pipe sizing cost.
