Transformer Loading % Calculator

Calculate how loaded your transformer is and check if it is overloaded, optimally loaded, or underutilized.

How This Calculator Works

Apparent Load (kVA) = Active Load (kW) ÷ Power Factor Loading % = (Apparent Load ÷ Transformer Rating) × 100

Loading Range Guide

Below 40% — Underloaded; consider right-sizing
40–85% — Optimal operating range
85–100% — High loading; plan capacity addition
Above 100% — Overloaded; immediate action needed

Transformer Loading — Why It Matters

Transformers are most efficient between 60–80% of rated load. Running above 90% causes excessive heat which degrades insulation and reduces transformer life. Running below 30% wastes the fixed cost investment and increases losses as a percentage of power delivered. Monitoring transformer loading monthly helps plan capacity additions before overloading occurs.
