⚠️ The 500-unit trap in Tamil Nadu
Tamil Nadu uses two different ladders, and which one applies depends on your total for the 2 months. Up to 500 units, the first 200 are free. Cross 500 and you move to the second ladder: only the first 100 units are free, and units 101–200 are charged at ₹4.70.
So 500 units cost ₹1,570, but 501 units cost ₹2,048.40 — one extra unit adds ₹478.40. If your reading is heading past 500, cutting a few units before the meter reading (an AC, geyser or motor for a few days) is worth real money.
Worked example — 400 units in 2 months
| Units 1–200 (free) | ₹0.00 |
| Units 201–400 × ₹4.70 | ₹940.00 |
| Total | ₹940.00 |
Meter rent, arrears and late fees are not included. The annual inflation-linked revision due from 1 July 2026 had not been issued when this page was checked.
