⚠️ The lifeline trap in UP

UP's regular slabs are telescopic, so for most homes there's no cliff. The trap is the lifeline category — for 1 kW connections using 100 units or less, billed at ₹3.00 a unit and ₹50 per kW.

A 1 kW lifeline home using 100 units pays about ₹340. At 101 units it no longer qualifies and is billed at the normal urban rate: about ₹646. If you're a lifeline consumer near 100 units, keeping under the limit is worth about ₹306 a month.

Also note: FPPAS changes every month and is a credit for September 2026 (−7.93%) — your bill can go down even if usage stays the same.

Worked example — 200 units, urban, 2 kW

Units 1–100 × ₹5.50₹550.00
Units 101–150 × ₹5.50₹275.00
Units 151–200 × ₹6.00₹300.00
Fixed charge₹220.00
Fuel surcharge (FPPAS) @ -7.93%−₹106.66
Electricity duty (assumed) @ 5%₹67.25
Total₹1,305.59

Electricity duty is assumed at 5% of energy + fixed charges (not confirmed in an official notification). Unmetered and BPL categories are not modelled.

Frequently Asked Questions

For urban metered homes: ₹5.50 per unit up to 150 units, ₹6.00 for 151–300 and ₹6.50 above 300, plus ₹110 per kW fixed charge. Rural metered homes pay ₹3.35 to ₹5.50 per unit and ₹90 per kW.

About ₹1,306 a month in a city and ₹929 in a village, for a 2 kW connection with September 2026 FPPAS.

FPPAS is the fuel and power purchase adjustment surcharge, a monthly percentage on the fixed and energy charges. It can be negative: for September 2026 it is −7.93%, which reduces the bill.

Lifeline applies to domestic connections of 1 kW using up to 100 units a month: ₹3.00 per unit and ₹50 per kW fixed charge. Above 100 units the normal domestic rates apply.

UP bills commonly show a 5% electricity duty on the fixed and energy charges. We could not confirm it in an official notification, so the calculator assumes 5% — check the figure on your bill.
